For those unable to make our October meeting, I’m afraid you missed a fabulous discussion and a wealth of information provided by our three great speakers, Board of Supervisors, Terry Nyhous, Peter Schwartz and Holder Trumbo. Thank you so much, not only for a great presentation, but also for your years of service to the community. As I feverishly took notes (shorthand skills would be highly useful in this job), I was so impressed by your depth of knowledge and your ability, and willingness, to simplify things into layperson’s terms.

Treasurer’s Report- Andrea Martens filled in for Lisa Richard to share the news that our current bank balance of $749.34 is about to be depleted drastically by our annual web site expense and our payment for the next ten months rental at the Marshall Community Center. Although we generally don’t need to ask for much in the way of donations (and we are good stewards of our resources), with our coffers depleted we would welcome any donations you are able to offer. Because we are not a 501(c)3 your donations, while greatly appreciated, are not tax deductible.
New Meeting Format- Donusia Lipinski reported on the new and improved meeting schedule for the SSC. Beginning on Nov. 14th, our meetings will begin at 5:30 and end at 7:30. The first hour will be dedicated to good food and scintillating conversation and the second to our guest speaker/s. Although the formal meetings will end a bit earlier than under our current format, you will be welcome to hang around and chat afterwards. We’re hoping that this shorter meeting time might be a bit more “user friendly” on a Sunday evening.
Rally to Restore Sanity/March to Keep Fear Alive- Ike Broaddus invited us to visit DC on Saturday Oct. 30th for the rallies hosted by Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

Supper for Safety- Lisa Chapman of Fauquier Domestic Violence Services (540-349-2719) extended an invitation to us to participate in their Domestic Violence Awareness Month fundraiser. The following restaurants have agreed to donate a portion of their profits to the FDVS on the following dates:

Feminist Book Club- Because she does not have enough to do (anyone who knows Lisa will recognize that this is said with tongue firmly in cheek J) Lisa Chapman has decided to establish the Fauquier Feminist Book Club with the intention of exploring women’s and social issues through literature, policy, research, film and discussion. Fauquier County School Board Strategic Plan- School Board member Sally Murray advised us to check out the Fauquier County Public Schools Strategic Plan. She also wanted to point out that the plan includes what the school community would like to see happen but that because there are costs associated with each proposal, they are aware they may not be able to afford everything. Holistic Entrepreneurs Alliance- Donusia Lipinski reminded us about the HEA which meets at 7:30 PM on the 4th Wednesday of the month at Donusia’s Blue Ridge Immigration Law Center, 9 N Third St., Suite 107 in Warrenton. The mission of the HEA, should you choose to accept it, reads “To build long-term relationships which support each member’s business, financial, personal and spiritual growth and thus advance the Alliance as a holistic community.” Their members include healers, bankers, mortgage brokers…
Poll Workers Needed- Andrea Martens, stepping into her role as secretary of the Fauquier County Democratic Committee, asked for volunteers to help staff the polls on November 2nd. The FCDC is working hard to ensure that we have people at all the precincts to support our great Democratic candidates, Krystal Ball and Jeff Barnett. If you are able to give a few hours to the FCDC, please contact Andrea or Christine Conley (Christine@topofnowhere.com).

Shortly after our meeting I received a letter from Claiborn Crain concerning his nomination of one of our previous speakers for a contest sponsored by the Atlantic magazine. Claiborn was so impressed with Trista Scheuerlein’s excellent presentation on her Farm to Table program in the Rappahannock County schools that he nominated her for the “Local Leaders, Big Responsibility!” contest. He wanted to share with us that Trista, along with two others, had won the contest!! Visit the following links to read the article in the Rappahannock News or to watch a short video. We were pleased to welcome Jesse Straight of “Jessie Straight’s Pastured Poultry” for an overview of his local poultry business.
§ Jesse was born and raised in Fauquier County and attended school at UVA. After reading Wendell Berry’s A Place on Earth, Jesse’s thoughts turned to agrarian ventures and he formed a successful, though not particularly profitable, vegetable CSA.
§ Jesse then heard about Joel Salatin and was impressed with his skills as a farmer and a businessman.
§ Salatin provided him the model for how to make a living doing high quality farming which prompted Jesse and his wife Liz to purchase a 7 acre farm in Fauquier County.
§ They launched their poultry venture last year with a small flock of chickens. This year they have hit the ground running with a large flock of chickens and a small group of turkeys.
§ The chicks are started in brooder houses and after three weeks are put into floorless field shelters which are moved once daily when the chicks are young and twice daily as they get bigger. Moving the shelters often allows the bird fresh forage and also assures that their manure will be distributed evenly across the pastures.
§ This intensive rotation is good for the chickens (they live as chickens are meant to live and consequently develop healthy immune systems) and good for the pasture.
§ The chickens are fed non-genetically modified feed which comes out of the Shenandoah Valley.
§ The birds are processed by the Straights right on the farm- this small scale processing removes all of the health risks associated with industrial poultry processing.
Jesse elaborated on the “chain of benefits” from operations such as his:
§ Healthy for the birds
§ Healthy for the environment
§ Healthy for the consumer
§ Farmer thrives- long term and short term
§ The community thrives in terms of physical and economic health. For every dollar farms pay in taxes they use 34cents of services.
§ The culture and the country benefit from having healthy, tasty, local food. A de-centralized food system is safer.
Jesse closed by inviting us all to come visit his farm. He emphasized that he and Liz are looking to make the farm a community gathering place which contributes to community cohesion.
