Holiday Potluck Dinner December 11

Get into the holiday spirit by visiting with old friends and making new! We’re having our annual holiday potluck dinner on Sunday, December 11th at 5:30 pm. The gathering will be hosted by Bob Zwick at Dondoric Farm.  Bob is also hosting the Fauquier County Democratic Committee earlier in the afternoon, providing ample opportunity to spend time with friends.

Also save the date  January 8, 2017. Although we are a non-partisan group, most of us will agree that the proposals made by our president-elect are counter to progressive ideals.  Therefore, the SSC “organizing committee” has decided to have a January meeting rather than waiting for the quarterly meeting in March. We have no speaker or specific topic, but welcome some discussion of organizations which will need support in the next few years. If there are suggestions for other specific topics of discussion, please email me. Otherwise we will just enjoy being with like-minded folks.

SSC – February Meeting

February 9, 2014

We will meet at the home of Whitney Petrelli,  7122 Baldwin Ridge Road, Warrenton

Our speaker will be Maggi MacQuilliam of the Piedmont Environmental Council.

Maggi is a native of Fauquier County where she grew up on Wildcat Mountain, surrounded by hundreds of acres of farmland and forestland under permanent conservation easement. Her surroundings inspired her to pursue land-use and planning issues and she graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a BA in Geography and Urban and Regional Studies from the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs.

She worked for the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Natural Heritage Program performing environmental review before first joining the PEC in 2008 as the Land Conservation and Stewardship Coordinator. Maggi worked for PEC in this capacity until she left for graduate school to pursue a MA in Community Development and Planning from Clark University’s School of International Development, Community, and the Environment in 2011.

After completing her master’s, Maggi returned to PEC in April 2013 as the Southern Fauquier and Culpeper Land Conservation Officer, where she works with landowners, counties, and conservation organizations to protect critical land and resources in the region.

Maggi will talk about the conservation successes that Fauquier County, and our portion of the Piedmont overall, has experienced and what the landscape for future conservation will look like. PEC’s effort not only encompasses work to preserve our open spaces, historic resources, and farmland, but also includes  issues such as wildlife habitat, working farms and forests, transportation solutions, clean air and water, and thriving communities. There are several Fauquier specific projects that PEC is working on, namely the Thumb Run Wildlife Habitat Corridor Project, assisting with the expansion of the Warrenton Branch Greenway trail to trail, and the expansion of our Fauquier Land Conservation Fund to now assist landowners in western Fauquier with the expense of working through a conservation easement project on their property.

She will also provide an update on the current status of the Bi-County Parkway if there is interest.
